We are very happy to announce that auditions for Shrek The Musical will be taking place on Sunday January 24th 2021 at the Evesham Arts Centre. Unlike any previous Phoenix show, our auditions, rehearsals and potentially the performances itself will be organised and managed very differently to comply with current COVID- 19 Government guidance to keep everyone safe. It is essential to read and acknowledge the importance of the following bullet points that detail how the audition day will be run:
-If you are age 11-21 (or will be 11 by the time of the show) and wish to audition as a principal part for the show, you must apply by filling in the principal application form below and emailing it to email@example.com by DECEMBER 31st 2020.
-If you are age 11-21 (or will be 11 by the time of the show) and wish to be in our chorus, you must apply by filling in the chorus application form and emailing it to the same address by the same deadline as stated above.
-Due to Government restrictions we will be limiting our cast to 30 including principals, we fully understand this may disappoint some of our members however we have to follow the guidelines and ensure everyone is safe.
-Once you have applied to be in the show, we will contact you (in plenty of time before the audition date) to confirm your audition timeslot. This will be to avoid any queues or gatherings at the theatre. If you only wish to be in the chorus you DO NOT have to audition, however we will still give you a time slot to come along to the theatre on audition day to have a small group sing along and for us to meet you.
-We ask that you only arrive at the theatre for the duration of the timeslot- parents please bear this in mind when arranging dropping off and collection of your children. We will not be allowing your child into the theatre until it is their agreed time slot, and parents will need to remain in their cars- please do not come into the theatre with your son/daughter.
-It is also essential that social distancing is followed, masks worn by all adults and children at all times (except during your audition on stage and if you have a medical exemption).
-Our risk assessment for the audition day is downloadable and listed below, it states all of our COVID-19 safeguards including the wearing of suitable PPE and temperature checks on entrance, hand sanitiser stations and continual cleaning of surfaces.
-After the auditions we will be contacting everyone who is successful in gaining a place in the show, both chorus and principals. However, you may be disappointed as we are not able to allow everyone who WANTS to be in the show to JOIN the show.
-Further details on the rehearsal process will be announced in due course however it will be predominantly online using zoom until April/May time where we will hope to commence in person rehearsals at Offenham village hall. Again, this will be subject to COVID 19- Government restrictions.
The Musical Parts & Further information
SHREK: Main character. A big, green, terrifying ogre who lives alone on a swamp. He embarks on a journey to rid his land of fairy-tale creatures and, along the way, falls in love with Fiona. Begins as a grumpy hermit but reveals his layers and eventually becomes the hero. We are looking for someone who: can sing well; can carry a show (Shrek is on stage for most of the production); can do a rough and ready accent (Scottish, if possible); can build a good character; this is a male part.
FIONA: The beautiful princess of Far Far Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt and multi-talented, she is not an ordinary princess. We are looking for someone who: can sing well; can be feisty yet comical; can dance well (you will need to do some tap dancing!); can build a good character; this is a female part.
DONKEY: A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Farquaad’s guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek’s looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. Easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimistic with heart. We are looking for someone who: can sing well; can be confident and interactive with an audience; can build a good character; this is a male part.
LORD FARQUAAD: The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of princesses to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel. We are looking for someone who: is willing to (potentially) work on their knees; can be a likeable villain; can build a good character; this is a male part.
DRAGON: A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter. We are looking for someone who: a strong and soulful singer; who can work alongside (a rather large) puppet; this part could be filled by more than one individual; this is a female part.
GINGY: A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. Puppet. Can be operated by actress appearing as a Sugar Plum Fairy. We are looking for someone who: is willing to operate a puppet; is a good ‘character’ singer; this can be a male/female part.
PINOCCHIO: The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a fondness for lying. We are looking for someone who: is a good ‘character’ singer; is feisty but likeable; can build a good character; this can be a male/female part.
THREE BLIND MICE: Part of the fairytale creatures. They are additional characters/singers in a song with Donkey. We are looking for someone who: a strong and soulful singer; this part is for three people; this is a female part.
There is also numerous fairytale creature roles for chorus, ensemble roles and other parts too! We will have many people in our show who are playing 2 smaller parts due to the restrictions.
Final things to remember:
Please bear in mind that we are living in somewhat uncertain times at the moment and a change in Government guidance may dictate a potential delay or postponement of the production, rehearsal and auditions. We are therefore asking you to be patient and work with us in being flexible in your approach to the show.
It is also worth noting that if things change positively with the current pandemic restriction then we may be able to return to a more ‘normal’ phoenix approach to the show and we will adjust our rehearsals, cast size and performance to suit any changes as advised by the Government.
We hope to hear from many of you wishing to be in the production, please have a good look at all of the information above and if you have any questions, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
We can’t wait to see you soon.
